SMELTER PROJECT
We were awarded the order as a key supplier for PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI)'s Smelter Project. The facility houses the world's largest single-line copper smelter, designed to process 1.7 million tonnes of copper concentrate annually into approximately 550,000 to 600,000 tonnes of copper cathode. The complex also includes a $200 million precious metals refinery with capacity to produce up to 54 tonnes of precious metals. Located in Manyar, Gresik, was constructed under an EPC contract with Japan's Chiyoda Corporation and Canada's Hatch.
Ensuring Supply Chain Resilience and On-time Delivery for a Large-Scale Smelter Project
Given the scale and complexity of PT Freeport's smelter project, one of the key challenges was managing the timely supply of a vast and diverse range of materials, including thus far, 26 pump skids, 621 E&I items, 14,640m of pipeline, 4,750 valves, 5,380 drill bits, 8,695 fittings, 7,370 customised special parts, 815 electrical instruments, 1,590 spare parts, and 12 tonnes of raw material. Coordinating such a wide variety of components from multiple suppliers, many with long lead times and custom specifications, posed a significant risk of delays and mismatched deliveries.
To overcome this, we implemented a centralised supply chain control system with phased delivery scheduling aligned to the project's construction sequence. Customised parts were pre-approved through close collaboration with PT Freeport's engineering team, eliminating last-minute design changes. For critical long-lead items such as pump skids and electrical instruments, we used pre-approved replacement long-lead materials combined with buffer stock for high-risk components, reducing lead time by 60%. Regular cross-functional progress reviews and on-site representation ensured that any potential shortages or quality issues were resolved before they could impact installation. This structured approach enables 100% delivery compliance, reduced on-site congestion, and kept the project on schedule despite the logistical challenges of supplying a remote industrial site.
